What is PSA?

The Protection Sports Association (PSA) is dedicated to promoting and developing protection dog sports through standardized training and competition. Our mission is to showcase the exceptional abilities of working dogs while maintaining the highest standards of excellence.

About the National Championship

PSA Nationals is the premier annual dog sports event, bringing together top trainers and their dogs from across the nation. In 2022, we're honored to host this prestigious event in the beautiful state of West Virginia.

This championship represents the culmination of a year's worth of training, dedication, and hard work. Participants compete at the highest level, demonstrating the incredible bond between handler and dog.

Competition Categories

Obedience Trials

Level 1

Basic obedience including heeling, sit, down, and recall commands

Level 2

Advanced obedience with distance control and complex commands

Level 3

Expert level requiring perfect execution and intense focus

Protection Trials

Level 1

Basic protection skills assessing courage and control

Level 2

Intermediate protection with complex scenarios

Level 3

Advanced protection simulating real-world situations

Judging Criteria

All competition events are scored by PSA-certified professional judges. Scoring criteria include:

  • Command Execution: Accuracy and precision in following commands
  • Focus & Attitude: Dog's concentration and willingness to work
  • Fluidity & Speed: Smoothness and efficiency of movements
  • Handler Coordination: Teamwork between handler and dog
  • Overall Performance: Complete presentation and sportsmanship
